Исследование, охватывающее период с 1970-х годов по настоящее время, освещает основные этапы развития научных подходов к интерпретации концепции эпистемологических убеждений за рубежом; особое внимание автором уделяется исследованиям последних тридцати лет. По итогам анализа сделан вывод о том, что в настоящее время ученые по-разному концептуализируют знание и познание, а также контекстуальную природу личностной эпистемологии, что обуславливает различия в существующих методах и моделях исследования эпистемологических убеждений.
