Это злокачественное новообразование характеризуется агрессивным течением и высоким потенциалом к метастазированию. Отмечается два пути развития меланомы: в результате чрезмерного размножения и перерождения пигментных клеток кожи – меланоцитов, так называемая меланома in situ (de novo) и невус-ассоциированный путь развития меланомы. При невус-ассоциированном пути меланома развивается чаще всего на фоне предшествующих простых (меланоцитарные, пограничные, внутридермальные) и диспластических типов невуса. Достоверное перерождение невуса в меланому можно установить только при гистологическом и молекулярно-генетическом исследовании.
