Разработка исследований в данной области проводится с учетом влияния микробиома кожи и его микробиологического видового состава на местный иммунитет, развитие воспалительных процессов, этиопатогенез опухолевого процесса и нарушение кожного барьера в целом. Предполагается, что выявление связи микробиома кожи с процессами онкогенеза с учетом возраста, пола, этнической принадлежности, образа жизни, питания и воздействия экологических факторов, в первую очередь УФ-излучения, во многом будет способствовать развитию фармакотерапии онкозаболеваний, определению диагностических маркеров, развитию новых методов лечения с использованием живых, генетически модифицированных или бактерий комменсалов, вирусов в качестве векторов, бактериальных компонентов для достижения различных терапевтических эффектов, модуляции иммунной системы, разрушения сосудистой системы, доставки лекарств и прямого онколиза. Проведенный анализ отечественных и зарубежных исследований указал на недостаточную научную разработанность данного вопроса.
