Cognitive barriers in switching between professional and foreign-language terminological thinking in students of non-linguistic universities

- The chapter addresses the cognitive barriers that arise in students of non-linguistic programmes when they move from Russian-language professional terminological thinking to the foreign-language one and back. Drawing on studies of activation, inhibition and cognitive control in code-switching and on data from pedagogical experiments of 2024–2026, a typology of switching barriers is built, comprising five classes: inventory, structural-definitional, register, temporal and affective-regulatory. A diagnostic procedure for identifying them is described, and recommendations for organising work with a terminological system are offered.

Starting from the aims and goals of foreign language teaching the article describes professional competencies which are developed in the course of studying English, and the approaches to teaching it, elaborating on the tasks that need to be solved for the development of a high-quality methodological model of teaching English to production management students.
