- Abstract:
- The chapter addresses two main issues. The first focuses on how A. Smith defines possible advantages and risks inherent in division of labour and reconstructs the ways in which he attempts to make use of some of the effects of specialized labor to curb these dangerous consequences. The second is Smith's understanding of human motivation, which is rooted in the human need for sympathy and recognition. Human kind desires nothing more profound than the approval of their counterparts and their own remorse. This fundamental need controls human actions, both between close relatives and strangers. This shows that, although, according to Smith, a commercial society produces many unstable consequences, this division of labour creates a situation in which well-educated politicians and men of letters can, nevertheless, curb the worst tendencies of such a society.
