Annotation

the chapter examines the history of lotteries as a mechanism for the random distribution of assets and a fundraising tool, as well as their role in financing socially significant projects. The evolution of lotteries is traced from the first European draws of the 15th century in Burgundy, Flanders, and Italy to the national lotteries of the modern era.
