The Newsreel “Die Deutsche Wochenschau” as an Ethnocultural Source
Review Article
Ethnic Culture Volume 8 No 3- Author:
- Yulia V. Berezina
- Work direction:
- World languages and literature
- Abstract:
- The article examines captured documentary newsreel footage, specifically materials from the newsreel series Die Deutsche Wochenschau as a distinctive linguistic, historical, and ethnocultural source, whose issues were released in German cinemas during the Nazi regime. The relevance of studying such materials is driven by the need for a critical re-evaluation of propagandistic German newsreels in contemporary historiography and linguistics. The paper focuses on the video protocol – its transcription into written form. Drawing on the source under study, the author reveals the principal specificity of the propagandistic newsreel text, which is characterized by a high degree of informativeness and serves as a factual commentary on the visual image, adding detail to the content of the footage. Alongside this, its key linguistic features are identified (the presence of onomastic and value-laden vocabulary), which function as markers of the ethnocultural and ideological content of texts of this type. The translation presented in the article combines a commitment to historical accuracy with a critical interpretation of the source text, which helps to comprehend its symbolic dimension, identify its semantic emphases, and justify the translation decisions. The paper also determines the advisability of using such sources as a basis for studying the mechanisms of influence on mass audiences in further historical and linguistic research.
