  • Dzhigitovka among modern youth — anachronism or future potential?

    Abstract:
    The article examines horse riding, a traditional martial art of the nomadic peoples of the Great Steppe, which has gone through a centuries–old path to modern sports. Special attention is paid to the causes and mechanisms of the revival of horse riding in modern Russia since 2005. The author reveals the multifaceted potential of horse riding as a tool for patriotic education and socialization of young people: strengthening physical health; familiarization with Cossack culture and historical traditions; development of teamwork skills, responsibility and quick decision-making; the formation of empathy and skills of interaction with a living being. It is concluded that riding is not only a sports field, but also an effective mechanism for preserving cultural heritage, transferring national traditions and forming vital competencies among the younger generation.

    Abstract:
    This article examines the emergence of the Cossacks in Rus' as the result of a long socio-historical synthesis on the southern periphery of Russian lands in the 13th–16th centuries. An analysis of written sources, archaeological data, and historiography allows us to identify key factors in the genesis of the Cossacks: the depopulation of the southern "outskirts" after the Mongol invasion, the constant threat of nomadic raids, the migration of socially mobile groups, and the preservation of ancient Russian military traditions. Particular attention is given to an early 20th-century discussion between Cossack regional specialist E. P. Savelyev and professional historian P. P. Sakharov, reflecting the methodological conflict between patriotic interpretation and academic skepticism.     В статье рассматривается процесс формирования межэтнических и конфессиональных отношений в культуре якутского, камчатского, забайкальского и дальневосточного казачества в период колонизации восточных окраин России. В культурном контексте казачество является частью русского народа, но более чем за 300-летнюю историю совместного проживания с представителями иноязычных народов в материально-бытовой и духовной сферах, совместной службе сложились прочные контакты, приведшие к изменению физического типа части казачьего населения, трансформациям его менталитета. К исследованию привлечены архивные материалы и анализ научных трудов казакаведов.
