Strategies of Translating Phraseological Units (on the Interview of Vladimir Putin to Tucker Carlson)
Research ArticleEthnic Culture Volume 6 No 2- Authors:
- Yulia Y. Klykova, Irina Y. Shachkova
- Work direction:
- World languages and literature
- Abstract:
- The article is devoted to the analysis of the functioning of linguistic units in socio-political texts. The authors of the article are interested in studying phraseological units in political discourse. Phraseologisms as a means of expressing expressiveness and implementing the pragmatic function of language are used by politicians to influence public and personal consciousness and, in some cases, to agitate for action. The aim of the research is to determine the strategies of translating phraseological units used by the Russian President Vladimir Putin in his interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson. In order to achieve this aim we conducted a comparative analysis of the most frequent ways of translating fixed phrases from Russian into English, and we also analysed the problems faced by simultaneous interpreters while translating them. The research was performed by the random sampling technique along with descriptive analysis and contextual interpretation methods. As a result of the analysis, we can make a conclusion that Vladimir Putin’s speech is characterized by national cultural features, abundant use of metaphors, phraseological units and occasional phraseologisms. At the same time, we have identified the most common strategy of translating phraseological units – the phraseological analogy, which makes it possible to identify translation equivalents that are different in form and image, but similar in content and meaning for the recipient culture.

Foreign language textbook as semiotic phenomenon
Review ArticleEthnic Culture Volume 5 No 4- Authors:
- Elena E. Chikina, Valeria A. Averina
- Work direction:
- Ethno-Cultural Problems of Education
- Abstract:
- The aim of this paper is the semiotic analysis of a foreign language textbook as a semiotic phenomenon reflecting the cognitive attitudes of its authors and aimed at forming not only external but also deep layers of the learner's linguistic personality, responsible for motivation, intents and attitudes. The material to be analysed is a popular line of EFL textbooks “English file” by British authors Ch. Latham-Koenig and C. Oxenden. The scientific novelty of the work is that for the first time a foreign language textbook is considered not as an educational and methodological text, but as an alternative reality, a dynamic complex sign, similar to the discursive space of a fiction book. The study is conducted by applying the method of contextual analysis, the method of cognitive-pragmatic analysis, and the interpretive method to the polycoded texts of EF-textbooks. The authors conclude that the semiotic complex of EF-textbooks exhibits the characteristics of an educational novel of fiction, where the learner assumes the function of a fairy-tale hero, acting in the space of English-language cultural mythologems, reference-metric elements, topoi and narratives. As a result of active realisation of the happy end narrative, supported by the system of topoi and precedent names characteristic of the English-language conceptosphere, the textbook uses the suggestive potential of the so-called soft power to form changes at the motivational-pragmatic level of the linguistic personality.

Lake Svetloyar in modern sacred discourse
Review ArticleEthnic Culture Volume 5 No 3- Authors:

- Work direction:

- Abstract:
- The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the sacred discourse of Lake Svetloyar. The material of the analysis is the texts of interviews taken from residents of the village of Vladimirsky and guests who visited this place, video content posted on the YouTube social network, publications in the media dedicated to the lake. The conducted discourse analysis reveals the peculiarity of the sacred discourse of Lake Svetloyar today as a complex and conflicting combination of Orthodox discourse, the discourse of neo-pagans, representatives of new age, individual religiosity, as well as the excursion activities of employees of the Museum and Tourist Complex “Grad Kitezh” in the village of Vladimirskoye. The article concludes that for all of them Lake Svetloyar is a natural sacred space, one of those in Russia in which either the Russian national and cultural identity, or the spiritual uniqueness of all mankind, or the source of individual “cultivation of the spirit” is most strongly manifested. The results of the study confirm that Lake Svetloyar, as one of the most important sacred spaces in Russia with a corpus of various narratives revealing its special nature and status, with a complex of ritual practices formed around it, remains significant and actively functioning in the modern socio-cultural space.

Representation of culinary and gastronomic code of modern culture in demotivators: linguistic and cultural aspect
Review ArticleEthnic Culture Volume 5 No 3- Authors:
- Olga A. Dimitrieva, Diana V. Andreeva
- Work direction:
- World languages and literature
- Abstract:
- Culinary and gastronomic code of modern culture, represented in a polymodal text, namely in demotivators, is of particular interest from the point of view of axiological perspective. The relevance of this topic is connected with the study of the creolized text and the ways of explication of modern values in the verbal and visual components of the demotivator. The material for the study is demotivators of culinary and gastronomic topics that are freely available on the Internet. A distinctive feature is a verbal / non-verbal indication, firstly, of the cultural component of the region; secondly, of the way of representing professional activity or any distinctive character trait. The main method is a comprehensive analysis of a demotivator. “Tradition – innovation” dichotomy is realized in demotivators. If the verbal component of the demotivator contains an indication of a foreign dish, then the visual component includes typical, traditional dishes for a particular culture. Conversely, traditional names of dishes or food products receive an “innovative” interpretation. Professional activity is a distinctive feature in the design of the dish, the method of cooking and the contents. There is an appeal not only to the background knowledge about the stereotypes of the professional sphere and nutrition practices, but also to the general cultural background.

Ontological Models of Proverbs as Precedent Texts (on the Material of Different Structural Models in the Russian and Chuvash Languages)
Research ArticleEthnic Culture Volume 5 No 2- Authors:
- Aleksei R. Gubanov, Ekaterina A. Kozhemiakova, Galina F. Gubanova
- Work direction:
- World languages and literature
- Abstract:
- This article presents an analysis of proverbs as precedent texts and their ontological (conceptual) models in the Russian and Chuvash languages as having different structures. The relevance of the work is due to the cognitive-pragmatic approach to the linguistic picture of the world of proverbs, as well as the need to determine the status of the ontological model of precedent texts of proverbs as a special structure of knowledge that characterizes the features of ethno-linguistic consciousness. Based on the material of Russian and Chuvash proverbs, a conceptual analysis of the precedent texts of proverbs is carried out. The basic models of the subject's cognitive decision-making strategy are distinguished: 1) cognitive setting for a low / high degree of argumentative impact: a) with the axiological dominant “gradation”; b) with a stereotypical dominant; c) with adaptive dominant; 2) cognitive attitude with the axiological component “positive – negative”. The identified types of axiological components of conceptual objects act as factors, grounds that ensure the use of proverbs as an argument, reflecting the values and traditions of the Russian and Chuvash cultural communities. Characteristic for acts of argumentation in which proverbs are used are such basic structures as one-sided argumentation and two-sided argumentation. In the discourse in the relationship of communicants in the languages under consideration, simple and complex speech acts with proverbs are used, which have the same pragmatic features, but differ in quantitative terms and communicative conditions of functioning. The structure of the precedent text of proverbs is presented as an ontology in the Protégé ontology editor system, since in modern research ontology is considered the leading paradigm of information content structuring.

Natsionalizm i populizm kak psikhologicheskie fenomeny

- Abstract:
- The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the interweaving of nationalism and populism, to identify the structural and socio-psychological factors from which the two discourses emerge. Nationalism is to come - as not so much a rational, but rather an emotional phenomenon, consisting of higher gnostic feelings of the belonging of mental processes to our "I". There are "banal" and "hot" forms of nationalism "banal" nationalism can be defined as the psychological presence of the nation against the background of everyday socio-political practices. Nationalism in the "hot" sense is to be as a psychological force that creates nation-states or threatens the stability of existing states. Also, Populist slogans are based on the psychology of winning one or another political force the trust and support of the masses. At the same time, the real goals of populist politicians (struggle for power, business project and enrichment), as a rule, are covered with socially attractive ideas. Standard populist statement: "We, the common people, will take to the streets and take back the country."

Semantics of anthroponyms in S. Snegov’s novel “People as Gods”
Research ArticleEthnic Culture Volume 5 No 1- Author:
- Vladimir O. Rozhin
- Work direction:
- World languages and literature
- Abstract:
- The article analyzes the central work of fiction by the famous Soviet science fiction writer of the second half of the 20th century, whose work was almost not considered in scientific works, and the problem of anthroponymy was not considered at all. The science fiction novel by S. Snegov “People as gods” served as the material for the study. Using contextual, mythological, structural-semantic and intertextual methods, an analysis was made of the proper names of the key characters in this work in order to better understand the author's intention. The protagonist's name, Eli, has an obvious connection with the biblical name El, which is found as a common and generic designation for God in various languages and dialects of the Middle East. In addition, it is a direct reference to the title of the work, which contains the central question in the artistic system of the novel about man as a god-like being. The name of the protagonist's wife – Mary – is the English form of the Russian name Maria, which contains a high meaning, well understood by the Christian consciousness. In the complete absence of any external or internal similarity between the heroine of Snegov and the Virgin Mary, there is an associative connection between them: as a biologist, Mary is looking for ways to spread life on uninhabited planets. In addition, she is the mother of a boy named Astre, who in the novel is associated with the Person of the Gospel Savior. The semantics of the names of other characters also connects the ideological space of the work with the foundations of the Christian worldview. Thus, consideration of the names of the central characters gives the author the opportunity to show that the onomastic field in terms of anthroponyms is semantically connected with biblical motifs and plots. System analysis leads the author to the conclusion that anthroponyms in the novel create a special semantic space that contributes to a deep understanding of the author's intentions.

Hedging in a Research Article
Review ArticleDevelopment of education Volume 5 No 1- Author:
- Irina V. Kochkareva
- Work direction:
- Дискуссия
- Abstract:
- The article focuses on linguistic hedging which helps avoid sounding arrogant or too certain of what you state in a research article. The relevance of the theme is based on the fact that nowadays the increasing number of Russian-speaking authors make attempts to publish their research articles in international journals. Writing research papers in the English language should follow some rules adopted in the English communicative culture. One of such rules is using hedging as a means of criticism mitigation and a “saving face” strategy. As hedging is not generally used in the Russian scientific discourse it is necessary to teach Russian scholars to apply hedging techniques in their writing. The aim of the article is to investigate the essence of hedging through analysis of sources written both in English and in Russian. The methods used include examination of Russian and English research papers, their comparative analysis, summing up recommendations on hedging in scientific discourse. As a result, the main lexical means of hedging are pointed out. A conclusion is made on necessity to include teaching linguistic hedging into courses of written academic communication for master degree students and postgraduates.

Functional and Language Features of Nicknames of German-Speaking Users of Humorous Internet Sites
Research ArticleDevelopment of education No 3 (9)- Author:
- Elena V. Zakharova
- Work direction:
- Practice
- Abstract:
- The author of the article outlines that nicknames represent a relatively new linguistic phenomenon in virtual communication, which has been the subject of many contemporary studies. However, some aspects of this phenomenon, as well as the spheres of the Internet in which nicknames function, remain insufficiently explored. The aim of the work is to solve the question whether nicknames of users of entertainment sites have special structural, semantic and functional features that distinguish them from users of other resources. To solve the above-mentioned question an attempt to identify and describe the features of nicknames of only one specific area – German-language humorous websites has been made by the author of the article. Methods. In the course of the research, the following methods were applied: structural analysis, statistical method, descriptive method, observation, comparison, generalization, systematization and interpretation, as well as the method of quantitative experimental data processing. Results of the research. In the course of the research more than 200 nicknames were collected and analyzed according to various criteria: by their language affiliation, by structural and semantic methods of their creation, by age and gender of the users. The author supposes that nicknames should be considered in the context of the particular Internet resources, as the discursive specificity of sites determines, first of all, the semantic feature of nicknames. It is emphasized that the main function of humorous websites is humor and entertainment, so the dominant motives for creating nicknames will be laughter and principled lightness. The author also pays special attention to the fact that unlike other types of nicknames, humorous virtual names are not intended to arouse interest and sympathy, but perform primarily identifying and pragmatic functions.

Sociocultural and Anthropoecological Distinctive Features of Pedagogical Discourse
Research ArticleEthnic Culture No 1 (2)- Author:

- Work direction:
- History, Theory and Practice of Ethno-cultural Education
- Abstract:
- The relevance of the study is due to the complexity of socio-cultural reality due to the aggravation of the contradiction between globalization and national-oriented processes, the increasing struggle of cultures, economies and ideologies, and the acceleration of scientific and technological progress. The purpose of the article is to consider sociocultural and anthropoecological distinctive features of pedagogical discourse. The author points out that anthropo-innovations, such as genetic engineering, cyborgization, cloning, integration with artificial intelligence, pharmaceutical advances, and GMO products threaten the existence of a person in his or her mental and physical integrity. The restriction of anthropological innovations is due to spiritual revival, reliance on traditional cultures, as well as the best cultural and pedagogical national experience, and is determined by the understanding of the soul as an integrating component of a person. In the Humanities, the description of an increasingly complex socio-cultural reality is closely related to its description in the context of various discursive plans. This approach is also promising for pedagogy. At the same time, modern trends in the development of the discursive approach “blur” the boundaries of pedagogical knowledge. The article presents a highly specialized definition of pedagogical discourse. During the study the following methods were applied: analysis of legal documents and scientific and methodical literature. It is proved that the pedagogical category “zone of proximal development” in its socio-cultural and anthropo-ecological contexts favors understanding of the distinctive features of educational and pedagogical discourse. It is concluded that orientation to the zone of proximal development of the individual contributes to the consistency of the socio-cultural experience, including nationally oriented components, transmitted by the teacher, with the life experience of the student, favors his or her emotional involvement in the educational process.

- Abstract:
- The ecology of a new Persian continuum culture, represented in two hypostases-states: the Iranian discourse and the Iranian dispositif is examined in the work. The Iranian discourse is considered on the basis of the introduction to the English translation of «Shahnameh» by Firdausi, composed and published by Arthur George and Edmond Warner in the early twentieth century. The Iranian dispositif is studied on the material of the Iranian media at the beginning of the twenty first century. The methodological basis of the work is the hermeneutical method, the phenomenological approach, and the linguistic topology. The structural units of analysis are linguoecological variables, or existentials, represented by text examples. The analysis makes it possible to draw conclusions about the ontological dimension of the Iranian discourse and the strategic imperative of the Iranian dispositif, determined by the ontological security of the Iranian society and the institutional culture of the Shanghai cooperation organization.

- Abstract:
- The author pays a special attention to classical model of university education as a system of knowledge transfer that is connected with the hope of increasing the effectiveness of teaching philosophy in the format of the history of ideas, that in the transition from a literacy of the classical era to the application of modern information technologies is associated with a number of persistent thinking stereotypes. The author points out that the temptation to simplicity of abstract introduction into competences, including critical reflection, excludes the use of modern discourse in the philosophical analysis of modernity. The author comes to conclusion that modernity itself as an area of scientific research, the integration of disciplinary approaches and educational programs remains on the other side of the conceptualization.

- The monograph discusses philosophical education in connection with situations of uncertainty. Efforts to read the philosophical work allow to consider philosophy as a way of intellectual and psychological activity on reconstruction of the lost, or searching for a new meaning in situations of uncertainty, when the need to make a decision is connected with the fundamental inadequacy of the initial information. As a tool for adapting to situations of uncertainty, philosophy uses conceptual analysis, developing a person’s linguistic competence.
