Leisure and Play in Plato's Teaching and Learning Philosophy
Book ChapterPsychological and pedagogical issues of modern education- Author:
- Aleksandr I. Kugai
- Work direction:
- Глава 8
- Abstract:
- A detailed study of the dialogues of Plato, the father of the fathers of philosophy and pedagogy, reveals that he considered leisure to be the central goal of education in the liberal arts. Schools should teach citizens not to avoid leisure by choosing excessive work, but instead to turn to virtue, embodied in the state in the daily practice of the liberal arts. But play was Plato’s method of education. Children learned best through playful activities that engaged their enthusiasm, that «turned the gaze of their souls» to the Good and the True. Likewise, play was the best way for adults to learn and practice philosophy, and it was the only way to discover new truth. Play was also central to the Socratic method. Plato found that dialogue at its highest and most serious level was a game for both teacher and student. Although the main thrust of playful education was to turn people to truth and to make them do philosophy for themselves, according to Plato, Being itself is in play.

D.G. Meade's Philosophy of Education
Book ChapterModern issues of pedagogy and psychology: theoretical and methodological approaches and practical research results- Author:
- Aleksandr I. Kugai
- Work direction:
- Глава 11
- Abstract:
- Among the classic works on the philosophy of education, the work of George Herbert Mead occupies a special place. Mead points out that we usually approach education in reverse, focusing, even in the early years, on assessing and ranking children on their individual performance. We also make adult goals central, breaking adult understandings into fragments that children absorb piecemeal, without meaning. Mead suggests that these priorities should be reversed. We should begin with simple social activities, such as play, which involves shared activities or simple division of roles. We should also begin with an emphasis on social-emotional comfort and connection rather than intellectual activity, gradually moving to more autonomous and intellectually oriented activities.

The Temptation of Simplicity in the Era of Transit
Book ChapterCulture. Science. Education- Author:
- Viacheslav M. Litvinskiy
- Work direction:
- Глава 3. Образование
- Abstract:
- The author pays a special attention to classical model of university education as a system of knowledge transfer that is connected with the hope of increasing the effectiveness of teaching philosophy in the format of the history of ideas, that in the transition from a literacy of the classical era to the application of modern information technologies is associated with a number of persistent thinking stereotypes. The author points out that the temptation to simplicity of abstract introduction into competences, including critical reflection, excludes the use of modern discourse in the philosophical analysis of modernity. The author comes to conclusion that modernity itself as an area of scientific research, the integration of disciplinary approaches and educational programs remains on the other side of the conceptualization.
