Foreign Layer of the Chuvash Book
Research ArticleEthnic Culture No 4 (5)- Authors:
- Alena M. Ivanova, Eduard V. Fomin
- Work direction:
- Problems of Crosslinguistic and Intercultural Communication
- Abstract:
- The article is devoted to the consideration of extraterritorial publications on the Chuvash theme. The purpose of the work is to identify the essential features of the foreign layer of the Chuvash book. The conclusions of the work are based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of bibliographic indexes and a direct study of the books themselves de visu. The authors of the article consider foreign books as an important component of modern Chuvash culture, endowed with communicative, cognitive-cumulative, ethno-presentative and educational functions. Extraterritorial editions of the Chuvash book appeared in the first half of the 19th century, and only by the end of the 20th century they formed an independent layer. At the same time, one should objectively speak of two exteriorics – the Chuvash and by the poet G. Aygi. Each of them is represented by almost 150 publications. The predominant problematic of the foreign language layer of the Chuvash book proper is the Chuvash language. Moreover, its notable aspect is the publication of books in the Chuvash language or their publication with parallel texts in Sweden and Turkey. G. Aygi’s foreign publications are already represented by collections of poems in Russian, published by the publishing house of the artist N. Dronnikov in France. This work is a publication that should provide an introduction to the scientific use of literature that has not yet become the property of the Chuvash Studies. Its task is to promote the full functioning of modern Chuvash science in conjunction with the world one. The authors come to the conclusion that, in general, the foreign layer of the Chuvash book has an enduring value, and many of the scientific publications published in the past are rightly elevated to the rank of classical ones by the scientists.

About the Dictionary of the Cheboksary Regional Speech of the Russian Language
Research ArticleEthnic Culture No 4 (5)- Authors:
- Eduard V. Fomin, Tamara N. Erina
- Work direction:
- Problems of Crosslinguistic and Intercultural Communication
- Abstract:
- This work is devoted to the discussion of the problems associated with the compilation of the the Russian language dictionary of the Cheboksary region speech. The purpose of the work is to consider the macro- and microstructure of the dictionary of speech of the residents of Cheboksary and the agglomeration. The authors use traditional methods of linguistics: descriptive, comparative, contrastive. The article is based on the materials of the designed dictionary, which, in turn, were collected in the course of many years of observation of the speech of the Cheboksary residents in natural conditions. The reaserchers come to a conclusion that he Cheboksary regiolect is an example of a self-sufficient collective idiolect, possessing stable specific uses of literary units of the Russian language. These units can exist not only in the form of published systematized lists or databases, they can also be lexicographic. Presenting the material as a separate vocabulary gives it more weight than publications in the form of small genres. Lexicography offers non-traditional urbanonyms, specific stable phrases and sentences, chuvashisms, which in general can be called cheboksarisms. In a dictionary entry, the required elements are the lemma and its interpretation. At the same time, such elements as transcription of the headword and chuvashism, etymological information, illustrative material can be activated in its composition as needed. By and large, the dictionary is intended not only to provide a scientific understanding of the Cheboksary region, but also to serve as an assertion of the region's self.

On Positive Complementarity in the Context of History of Missionary Work in the Chuvash Region
Research ArticleEthnic Culture No 3 (4)- Authors:
- Natalya I. Gerasimova, Sergey I. Gerasimov, Svetlana Y. Drozdova
- Work direction:
- History, Theory and Practice of Ethno-cultural Education
- Abstract:
- The article explores the reasons why the interaction between Russian and Chuvash culture became possible in the framework of Christian missionary work. Purpose of the study is to show that both cultures have positive complementarity. Methods. Comparative, analytical and descriptive methods were used by the authors. The study is based on the cultural and historical situation, i.e. adoption of Christianity in the Chuvash and Russian culture. Research results. In the process of research, the authors identified common features that bring the transition to the fold of Christianity in Ancient Russia and the Chuvash culture closer together, despite the thousand-year time distance. In their opinion, the deep assimilation of Christianity by the Chuvash culture is explained by the presence of a certain algorithm that regulated the penetration of the new religion into the pagan environment. The authors define Russian culture as donor culture and Chuvash culture as recipient culture. Christianity became the force thanks to which the Chuvash culture was revived. Before the adoption of Orthodoxy within the framework of its ethnoreligion, it was an immature education that needed to realize its creative potential. The Chuvash culture needed to realize the creative possibilities inherent in it, representing an entity striving to realize itself. Thanks to the Christian enlightenment, the Chuvash culture got this opportunity and successfully implemented it.

The purpose of the article is to determine the prospects of preserving the ethnic culture of the members of the Chuvash diaspora in the framework of integration processes in the multicultural environment of the Moscow region. Methods. The author of the article conducted a sociolinguistic survey in the Chuvash diaspora of the Moscow region; the selective sampling included 100 respondents (85 respondents belong to the first generation of the Chuvash diaspora, 15 – to the second). One of the aspects of the survey was to study the respondents’ language loyalty, which indirectly manifests itself in in the knowledge and observance of ethnic traditions and customs. The respondents were asked questions concerning the criteria of their belonging to the Chuvash ethnic group, observance of national traditions and customs, features of the Chuvash ethnic culture, intergenerational transmission of ethnic culture. Based on their answers, tables on age cohorts for representatives of both generations were compiled. Results. More than half of the respondents in the sampling in the first generation (55%) observe Chuvash traditions and holidays, especially representatives of younger and middle cohorts; in the second generation, ethnic culture is somewhat fading (27%). More than half of the respondents in the first generation (58.6%) intend to transmit knowledge about their ethnic culture to children. Women in the sampling rather tend to transmit material culture, while men spiritual one. The author concludes that, despite the fact that living far from the small homeland affects the preservation of ethnic culture, however, at present, in the conditions of polycultural urban environment, the diaspora is the most demanded form of social adaptation, especially among the younger generation, among whom many demonstrate an active life position and involvement in the process of preserving Chuvash ethnic culture in the Moscow region.
