  • Metacognitive Strategies in Text-Based Activities (for legal texts)

    Abstract:
    Globalization on the one hand and border closure on the other hand spur communication process participants in all areas of human activities and especially young researchers into foreign language learning which is currently focused on foreign professionally-oriented texts. Traditional methods of teaching a foreign language based on grammatical approach are not effective in solving the problem of language competence development when working with professionally-oriented texts. The objective of this work is to assess the effectiveness of the method of legal texts concept analysis using a technique of metacognitive strategies in reading activity. Several groups of law students, Southwest State University (Kursk, Russia) took part in the experiment based on the above-mentioned method. Students performed both conventional (skimming, key words finding) and specially developed tasks (constructing a text compositional structure model, plotting a text graphical representation, etc.). Original criteria were used to evaluate the performance. The experiment showed a persistent significant difference in learning indicators and students’ behaviour in the control and experimental groups. The technique contributed to the development and enhancement of students’ skills improving their foreign language competence. The obtained skills facilitated communication and contributed to students’ satisfaction with the learning process, increased their creative and professional potential, students’ sustainable intrinsic motivation.

    Abstract:
    The article deals with the problem of forming the value attitude of students to the Russian native language. One of the ways to solve it is to work with text. It is indicated that special attention is paid to the linguistic and cultural and aesthetic perception of the text, the analysis of the ethnocultural units included in it. Diagnostics of 6th grade students helped to identify difficulties associated with the axiological component of text analysis. Based on the diagnostic results, comprehensive training exercises have been developed in three main areas: actualization of background cultural knowledge for understanding the text, working with the word in the text, selection of linguistic means of representation when creating a text.

  • Foreign language textbook as semiotic phenomenon

    Abstract:
    The aim of this paper is the semiotic analysis of a foreign language textbook as a semiotic phenomenon reflecting the cognitive attitudes of its authors and aimed at forming not only external but also deep layers of the learner's linguistic personality, responsible for motivation, intents and attitudes. The material to be analysed is a popular line of EFL textbooks “English file” by British authors Ch. Latham-Koenig and C. Oxenden. The scientific novelty of the work is that for the first time a foreign language textbook is considered not as an educational and methodological text, but as an alternative reality, a dynamic complex sign, similar to the discursive space of a fiction book. The study is conducted by applying the method of contextual analysis, the method of cognitive-pragmatic analysis, and the interpretive method to the polycoded texts of EF-textbooks. The authors conclude that the semiotic complex of EF-textbooks exhibits the characteristics of an educational novel of fiction, where the learner assumes the function of a fairy-tale hero, acting in the space of English-language cultural mythologems, reference-metric elements, topoi and narratives. As a result of active realisation of the happy end narrative, supported by the system of topoi and precedent names characteristic of the English-language conceptosphere, the textbook uses the suggestive potential of the so-called soft power to form changes at the motivational-pragmatic level of the linguistic personality.

  • Congruent and incongruent self-concept of students in different types of communication

    Abstract:
    The purpose of the article is to identify the influence of the stability of the self-concept and different types of communication on the communicative tactics of interpersonal interaction, represented in the speech act. The hypothesis states that incongruence/congruence of self-concept determines the choice of speech act of the person in the process of cognition; the type of self-concept system that affects relationships with people is reflected in the speech act. Speech act, according to the concept of contextual education, is a unit of communication, the basis of activity and social interaction. The article presents the results of empirical research, in which 333 first-year students of two universities of Yekaterinburg participated. J. Kelly's repertory grid technique was used in the study. Personality constructs, which are obtained in the study, are constructed on the basis of bipolar differences. Personal constructs allowed us to identify the type of communication that affects the relationship with people; they allow us to evaluate the self-concept of first-year university students; self-esteem, assessment of significant others, real self and ideal self-presented in the constructs give an idea of the stability of the self-concept and the presence of cognitive conflicts caused by personal characteristics. Based on the analysis of role preferences in repertoire lattices and the distribution of the real self and the ideal self by type of communication, the levels of stability of the self-concept and the basic characteristics of a speech act are described, such as the nature of one’s own message, the correspondence of what is communicated and what is experienced, one’s position and role in communication, type of speech behavior, giving another person a role in communication. Theoretical significance – a tool is proposed for determining the level of stability of the self-concept, which, in unity with the type of communication, influences the nature of the speech act of a first-year student. Practical significance – determining the individual characteristics of a speech act will allow us to identify the level of formation of self-awareness of the subject of cognition, which will contribute to the creation of psychological and pedagogical conditions aimed at identifying the adaptive potential of first-year students at the initial stage of professionalization (initiation).

  • Representation of culinary and gastronomic code of modern culture in demotivators: linguistic and cultural aspect

    Abstract:
    Culinary and gastronomic code of modern culture, represented in a polymodal text, namely in demotivators, is of particular interest from the point of view of axiological perspective. The relevance of this topic is connected with the study of the creolized text and the ways of explication of modern values in the verbal and visual components of the demotivator. The material for the study is demotivators of culinary and gastronomic topics that are freely available on the Internet. A distinctive feature is a verbal / non-verbal indication, firstly, of the cultural component of the region; secondly, of the way of representing professional activity or any distinctive character trait. The main method is a comprehensive analysis of a demotivator. “Tradition – innovation” dichotomy is realized in demotivators. If the verbal component of the demotivator contains an indication of a foreign dish, then the visual component includes typical, traditional dishes for a particular culture. Conversely, traditional names of dishes or food products receive an “innovative” interpretation. Professional activity is a distinctive feature in the design of the dish, the method of cooking and the contents. There is an appeal not only to the background knowledge about the stereotypes of the professional sphere and nutrition practices, but also to the general cultural background.

  • Ontological Models of Proverbs as Precedent Texts (on the Material of Different Structural Models in the Russian and Chuvash Languages)

    This article presents an analysis of proverbs as precedent texts and their ontological (conceptual) models in the Russian and Chuvash languages as having different structures. The relevance of the work is due to the cognitive-pragmatic approach to the linguistic picture of the world of proverbs, as well as the need to determine the status of the ontological model of precedent texts of proverbs as a special structure of knowledge that characterizes the features of ethno-linguistic consciousness. Based on the material of Russian and Chuvash proverbs, a conceptual analysis of the precedent texts of proverbs is carried out. The basic models of the subject's cognitive decision-making strategy are distinguished: 1) cognitive setting for a low / high degree of argumentative impact: a) with the axiological dominant “gradation”; b) with a stereotypical dominant; c) with adaptive dominant; 2) cognitive attitude with the axiological component “positive – negative”. The identified types of axiological components of conceptual objects act as factors, grounds that ensure the use of proverbs as an argument, reflecting the values and traditions of the Russian and Chuvash cultural communities. Characteristic for acts of argumentation in which proverbs are used are such basic structures as one-sided argumentation and two-sided argumentation. In the discourse in the relationship of communicants in the languages under consideration, simple and complex speech acts with proverbs are used, which have the same pragmatic features, but differ in quantitative terms and communicative conditions of functioning. The structure of the precedent text of proverbs is presented as an ontology in the Protégé ontology editor system, since in modern research ontology is considered the leading paradigm of information content structuring.

    The chapter describes the problems of teaching propaedeutics of childhood diseases, which were discussed at the third All-Russian conference «Knowledge of propaedeutics is the basis of clinical thinking of a pediatrician." The characteristics of modern textbooks on this discipline, published in Russia in the last 15 years, are given, their advantages and disadvantages are described. The educational and methodological manuals and workshops published in SPbGPMU on separate sections of the program at the Department of Propaedeutics of Children's Diseases are described. Discussions are presented on the methodology of teaching practical skills, innovations in teaching and traditional work at the bedside, methods for assessing the physical development of children and childhood nutrition. It is emphasized that the formation of a student's motivation for learning largely depends on the personality of the teacher, his human qualities, charisma, competence and empathy.

    Abstract:
    The article deals with a vital problem of the specifics while mastering a foreign language (English) by the students studying at the training department of “Public and municipal administration”. The aim of this scientific article is to analyze the peculiarities of studying a foreign language by students of management specialties, which can allow one to explore English-language sources with a complex vocabulary and conceptual apparatus. The author of the article uses theoretical and empirical research methods. The research material is the content of professional training, while the means of education are authentic English texts of professional subjects, allowing students to master international terminological tools. The results of the research show the need to develop critical, analytical thinking among the students, in addition to mastering the general course of a foreign language (English). The scientific direction of ESAP is depicted in the article, which allows professional and language skills’ teaching in a specific disciplinary context. It can be concluded that the attention of the students studying a foreign language in the direction of preparation 'State and municipal management' should be focused on various types of analysis, such as logical, comparative, lexical and terminological, contextual ones, which, in turn, can require critical and analytical thinking development, selection of information, its processing, interpretation, as well as its adequate use.

  • About the Results and Conclusions of Checking the Level of Formation of Textual Competencies of Younger Schoolchildren in Their Native (Chuvash) Language

    The purpose of the article is to substantiate approaches to the development and description of tools for monitoring the level of formation of textual competencies of younger schoolchildren in the Chuvash language, to present the results of checking the level of formation of textual competencies of younger schoolchildren in their native Chuvash language. The main research methods: analysis of the methodology of formation and monitoring of general communication skills of younger schoolchildren, the results of All-Russian testing works of students in the 4th grade of the Chuvash Republic in Russian in order to identify difficulties, diagnostics of the level of formation of textual competencies in the native language of students in grades 1-4 of Chuvash schools. The importance of primary education and the importance of language learning, including the formation of textual competencies in younger schoolchildren, is pointed out. The main problems of providing the Chuvash primary school with didactic materials for the development of native speech, as well as tools for monitoring the level of formation of textual competencies are highlighted. An assumption about the expediency of creating and tools for monitoring the level of formation of textual competencies within the framework of the development of a set of didactic materials on the Chuvash language for grades 1-4 is put forward. Research results and conclusions. The necessity of developing verification works designed to ensure the unity of the educational space of the Chuvash Republic for teaching the Chuvash language, including by providing educational institutions with uniform verification materials and uniform criteria for evaluating educational achievements, is substantiated. The purpose and objectives, the methodology of developing diagnostic materials for determining the level of formation of textual competencies are clarified. The materials and results of diagnostics of textual competencies of younger schoolchildren in the Chuvash language are described. The ideas and provisions implemented in the materials for determining the level of formation of textual competencies in the Chuvash language were successfully tested in grades 1-4 in a number of Chuvash schools, and also approved by teachers.

  • Dialogue of Cultures in the Early Lyrics of the Udmurt Poet Flor Vasiliev

    Abstract:
    The article is devoted to the analysis of lyrics by Flor Vasiliev (1934–1978) which is a new page in the history of Udmurt Soviet poetry. The young poet went beyond the generally accepted standards thanks to the rich literary context. This article is devoted to the study of the early lyrics of Flor Vasilyev in the aspect of the dialogue of cultures. The subject of analysis is poems written in the early 1960s. The purpose of the study is to identify and describe literary contacts with representatives of different cultures. The method of analysis is comparative studies. The result of the study is as follow: Flor Vasiliev introduces the names Remarque, Picasso, Grieg, Rembrandt into his poems to depict the general cultural atmosphere of Russia in the 1950s – 1960s, the poet follows the tradition of Russian pop lyrics. Interest in impressionism (Renoir and others) helps to hone style when portraying landscapes and the inner world of the hero. Irony begins to play a large role in the poems of early Flor Vasiliev, the poet learns in this direction from Heinrich Heine. Thus, thanks to the dialogue of cultures, there is a transition from «loud» to «quiet lyrics», humanistic traditions raise the poetry of Flor Vasiliev to a new qualitative level.

    The scientific work is devoted to topical issues of intercultural communication. The problem is considered in the paradigm of improving the creative intercultural communicative competence of FSBEI of HE "Ural State Mining University" college students. Creative intercultural communicative competence is called the integrative quality of a linguistic personality, capable of knowing the surrounding reality by language means presented in the text-culture, and aimed at creative implementation in the process of conflict-free communication, and the text-culture is considered as a unit of information transfer and as a pedagogical condition for improving creative intercultural communicative competence of college students. In the article, the authors build a connection between language, culture, text and communication and touch upon the issues of modeling and a complex of pedagogical conditions for improving the creative intercultural communicative competence of college students.

    Abstract:
    Статья посвящена анализу контекстной рекламной кампании, предпринятой одним из санаториев Калининградской области, которая оказалась малоуспешной. В статье проведен SEO-аудит сайта санатория, проанализированы основные настройки рекламной кампании, изучены достоинства и недостатки рекламной кампании основного конкурента объекта исследования. Выявлены причины низкой эффективности рекламной кампании и даны рекомендации по исправлению недостатков.

  • Positional Vision of Poetic Text Structures as a Tool of Interpretation (Based on the Poems of Joseph Brodsky)

    Abstract:
    The article is devoted to the application of the positional vision of the structures of a literary text to the categorical apparatus of the functional theory of text. The relevance of the problem under consideration is explained by the need to systematize the methodological concepts of various concepts in modern Russian studies and to develop, on this basis, methodological recommendations that can improve the use of the textocentric approach with focus on school education. The article uses philological methods of modern text theory, in particular, structural theory of text (Yu. M. Lotman), stylistic analysis of a literary text (N. A. Rudiakov), linguistic tool studies (A. N. Rudiakov), methods of highlighting intense positions of text (I. V. Arnold), some ideas of communicative stylistics (N. S. Bolotnova), as well as original author's methods. The study material are presented by poems by Joseph Brodsky: «Vse chuzhdo v dome novomu zhiltcu…» (1962), «V derevne Bog zhivet ne po uglam…» (1964 ) and «Ty ne skazhesh komaru…» (1991), the experience of the interpretation of which made it possible to illustrate the epistemological effectiveness of the positional approach. The results of the research allow us to systematize the ideas about the basic principles of linguistic and hermeneutical description of a literary text. Modeling of the functional relationship between the conceptual information of a poetic text and its significant components, identified when using the concept of "strong position of the text", is possible by applying a General regulatory understanding of language activity, which is based on the approach to language as a tool for speech influence on the individual picture of the recipient's world. The conclusions reached by the author of the article make it possible to clarify the basic concepts of the functional theory of text related to the interpretation of the elements of the individual author's world picture in the literary text and also to offer a methodological basis for applying linguistic knowledge to the issues of text analysis in school practice.
