Abstract: The article examines the possibility of using fragments of a Victorian detective novel as illustrative teaching material in classes on the discipline “Russian Language in Professional Service Activities” in educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. The concept of “illustrative potential” of a literary text in relation to departmental education is substantiated; the methodological resources of three works are analyzed in sequence.

The article addresses the issues related to the development and improvement of cadets’ motivation in a university of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the learning process within the framework of teaching the discipline “Russian Language in Professional Service Activities.” The aim of the article is to identify and describe the most effective methods for developing cadets’ motivation for academic activities, and to substantiate the psychological mechanisms of the aforementioned methods of influencing the motivational and need‑based sphere of cadets’ personalities.
