The conclusion is made about the need for a personalized approach to teaching English, taking into account the cognitive characteristics of students.

    This paper presents practical experience in applying a range of information technologies (e-textbooks; online searching and reading of authentic articles and news; viewing educational videos; multimedia project work; online consultations; student-teacher communication in the student's personal account; online testing) to the teaching of first- and second-year students at RTU MIREA. Based on the analysis of practical experience, a conclusion is drawn on how information technologies help engage students majoring in IT in foreign language learning, make lessons more understandable, implement a student-centered and differentiated approach to teaching, and quickly assess knowledge and provide feedback.

    Abstract:
    The chapter notes that the transformation of higher education and the transition to the digital university model highlight the relevance of organizing independent work for students, particularly those in engineering disciplines, when learning a foreign language within the electronic information and educational environment (EIEE). Based on a theoretical analysis of scientific literature, key factors influencing independent work in a digital environment have been identified. It is established that psychological determinants include academic self-regulation, the motivational-volitional sphere, cognitive styles, language anxiety, and digital competence. Pedagogical determinants encompass modular design and microlearning, pedagogical support (scaffolding), critical integration of artificial intelligence tools, formative assessment, and gamification. A theoretical model for organizing independent work has been developed, comprising motivational-goal, content-operational, communicative-collaborative, and evaluative-reflexive components. The study concludes that the technological infrastructure of the EIEE requires specific pedagogical design and consideration of the psychological characteristics of engineering students. The findings of the study can be applied in the design of educational programs, the development of teaching materials, and the creation of support systems for independent work in digital universities.

    The chapter is devoted to the study of the didactic potential of modern English for Specific Purposes (ESP) textbooks. The paper presents a multidimensional analysis of the structure, content, and methodological apparatus of two textbooks designed for students of technical and legal specialties. Special attention is paid to the compliance of educational materials with the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standards for Higher Education, the principles of communicative linguodidactics, as well as their ability to develop both universal cultural and professionally oriented competences. The empirical part of the study, based on a survey of students and teachers, reveals the actual didactic potential of the textbooks, their strong points and problematic aspects for methodological improvement. The research will be useful for foreign language teachers, researchers in the field of linguodidactics, authors of textbooks, as well as master's degree students and postgraduates of relevant research trends.

    The chapter addresses the problem of creating a modern integrative model for teaching foreign language professional communication, taking into account the requirements of professionalization and specialization. Teaching professional communication is considered as an independent area in the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. The article presents a theoretical justification of the proposed model, characterized by phasing and staging of instruction (in accordance with the Federal State Educational Standard) and level-based content (bachelor's degree, language proficiency levels B1-C1). Modern approaches to modeling the process of teaching professional communication are considered as a synthesis of conceptual provisions of pedagogical and linguodidactic paradigms. The results of linguistic research on metalanguages of various types of professional discourse for educational purposes are clarified. The basic components of the didactic support of the model are identified, and the pedagogical tools for its implementation are characterized. The content of the diagnostic system for assessing the level of communicative competence formation is defined. A system for diagnosing the effectiveness of professional communication language proficiency is proposed, specifying invariant tasks for levels B1-C1. Theoretical methods, content analysis, continuous sampling method, and statistical methods were applied.

    The article examines the potential of Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) systems in foreign language teaching within the context of digital transformation in education. It analyzes the theoretical foundations of AWE implementation, their functional capabilities, and their pedagogical value in developing learners’ writing competence. Particular attention is paid to the advantages of automated feedback, including immediacy, increased learner autonomy, and enhanced motivation. The study includes a comparative analysis of students’ written work before and after the use of an AWE system, revealing a reduction in language errors and an overall improvement in writing quality. At the same time, certain limitations are identified, such as insufficient accuracy in assessing semantic content and the risk of superficial error correction. The study concludes that AWE systems are most effective when integrated into the educational process in combination with teacher guidance.

    Abstract:
    This article presents the results of an empirical analysis of the relationships between psychological well-being (the PERMA model) and professionally significant personal resources among linguistics students at a pedagogical university. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 100 fourth-year students. Using nonparametric statistics (Spearman's ρ, Mann–Whitney U test), the formation of a "resource cluster" was confirmed: growth mindset and foreign language learning enjoyment demonstrate a strong mutual relationship (ρ = 0.692), while emotional intelligence is most closely associated with well-being (ρ = 0.745). An analysis of extreme groups (25th/75th percentiles) revealed a significant superiority of students with high PERMA scores across all three resources (r = 0.45–0.61). A weak non-significant relationship was found between engagement and self-control (ρ = 0.193, p = 0.054), which does not contradict theoretical conceptions of engagement.

    There is a hidden but persistent resistance among foreign language teachers to moving beyond a purely linguistic perspective and away from a fragmented presentation of cultural facts toward a systemic cultural approach. This chapter analyzes the historical and social roots of this resistance in the educational systems of the United States, France, and Ireland. It outlines the principles of a discourse-based pedagogy that views culture as language and language as culture, and that makes the process of enunciation itself the locus of cultural difference and personal choice. Such a pedagogy allows teachers to celebrate the diversity they find in the target culture and in the cultures present in their own classrooms while remaining fundamentally and fundamentally «language» teachers.

  • Developing Critical Thinking in Future Foreign Language Teachers Through Generative Language Models: A Systematic Review of Empirical Studies

    In the context of digital transformation in education, the development of critical thinking among future teachers has become increasingly urgent due to widespread integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning processes. This paper presents a systematic review of empirical studies (2019–2025) that examine the pedagogical potential of generative language models for fostering critical thinking among students in teacher education programs. This work constitutes a secondary analysis; it synthesizes findings from ten peer-reviewed empirical and theory-informed empirical studies conducted in Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, and other countries. The literature analysis reveals that effective use of neural network-based AI tools can support the development of core critical thinking operations provided that specific pedagogical strategies are employed. At the same time, the review systematically identifies key risks associated with AI integration: cognitive laziness, academic dishonesty, and the unreliability of generated information. The paper emphasizes the necessity of cultivating students’ digital and critical literacy as a prerequisite for mindful engagement with AI-generated content, as well as the transformation of the teacher’s role from a knowledge transmitter to a facilitator of a reflective-discursive learning environment. This systematic review contributes to the theory of digital pedagogy by proposing an approach to integrating generative AI models into the professional training of language teachers.

    The article examines the concept of continuing education in the context of modern socio-economic changes and technological development. The main focus is on the role of continuing education in training professionals who are able to adapt to rapidly changing labor market conditions and requirements. The impact of technological progress on society and the education system is analyzed, and the main functions of continuing education are highlighted: professional, social and personal. The work emphasizes the importance of developing students' independence, responsibility and determination in the process of continuous professional education. The necessity of updating the knowledge and skills of specialists in various fields is emphasized in order to maintain competitiveness. The article considers the role of learning foreign languages in professional training and their impact on the expansion of human opportunities in education, work and communication. Theoretical research methods were used to analyze the problem, including analysis of scientific publications and official documents, such as the Concept of Technological Development of Russia until 2030. As a result of the analysis, the key competencies necessary for successful professional, family and social life in the context of the transformation of the socio-economic sphere have been identified. Among them are computer skills and foreign languages, technological literacy, entrepreneurial skills and social skills. It was also noted that Nizhnevartovsk State University (NVSU) pays special attention to the study of English in the framework of the program "English for academic mobility". It is emphasized that academic mobility contributes to the expansion of educational horizons, the formation of intercultural competencies and the creation of employment potential for graduates.

    The article is devoted to the possibilities of using generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools in teaching English for specific purposes (ESP). The article examines innovative approaches to learning, being necessary due to the rapid development of technology and requirements of the modern labor market. It analyzes the prospects of GAI in ESP context, including a comparative description of the most popular AI tools. The authors explore the functionality, advantages, and limitations of these tools, their impact on teaching a professionally oriented foreign language. Examples of the successful application of GAI in university courses are given. The emphasis is made on the development of communication skills and the adaptation of educational materials to specific professional fields. The article discusses the results of the empirical study showing positive changes in students' learning motivation and progress. The use of GAI contributes to more effective and personalized learning, improves vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and writing skills. However, the successful implementation of GAI requires additional knowledge and training of teachers, as well as focusing on the educational context. Special attention is paid to the need for a balanced approach when using GAI in order to avoid dependence on technology and preserve the positive experience gained in the process of applying traditional teaching methods.

    Abstract:
    This work is devoted to the development of the spheres of individuality of a university student through the integration of an electronic course into the educational process during foreign language classes for the first- and second-year bachelor students of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University. The creation of a specially designed course in the electronic information and educational environment (https://eios.kantiana.ru/) is based on a number of principles: individualization and variability of the studying process, practical focus of the educational material. The electronic learning course allows the student to develop spheres of individuality through planning and building an educational route, through the choice of educational material, preparation of creative project works, through monitoring academic progress, and etc. Experimental verification of the exposed hypothesis that the development of the student’s individuality spheres will be quite effective provided that a specially created electronic learning course is implemented into the educational process, allowing to activate all student’s mental processes when studying a foreign language. This verification is realized in accordance with three stages. The obtained results have confirmed the proposed hypothesis about a positive influence of the electronic learning course on the development of spheres of individuality of a student in the process of studying.

    The article discusses modern approaches to foreign language teaching, emphasizing the use of virtual excursions as an effective method that promotes the development of language and cultural skills. Virtual excursions, which utilize contemporary digital technologies such as 3D modeling and augmented reality, provide learners with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the language environment and broaden their cultural horizons, which is vital in the context of international communication. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the potential of using virtual excursions in foreign language teaching at a non-linguistic university. The research was conducted at the Yakovlev’s University, where future teachers participated in a series of virtual excursions focusing on the history and culture of Great Britain. The research methodology included surveys, observations, and semi-structured interviews, allowing an assessment of the students’ language preparedness and engagement before and after the implementation of the innovative teaching method. The results showed a significant improvement in language skills, perception of authentic audio and video materials, as well as knowledge of the cultural aspects of the studied language countries.

The paper analyzes the potential integration of AI into the Russian as a second language (RCT) learning process, examining the benefits and limitations of this approach. It also focuses on personalizing the educational experience through the use of tools such as intelligent chatbots, automated speech processing and recognition systems, and gamified learning platforms.
